Musings & Tips – Moving in with Someone for the First Time? Get a Dishwasher

A client had a most astute observation today as we were out looking for one bedrooms across the Villages:

“We’re going to be living together for the first time.  There are a lot of uncertainties that come with that, so I’m going to be damn sure we have a dishwasher.”

While that may sound a little bit like a non-sequitor, there was a real truth buried there regarding human relationships and how to plan for the best outcome.  With enough issues out there that can arise and cause strife in any relationship, especially one moving to a new level, it is important to try and make sure the little things are covered.  Something petty like washing dishes can be used as a jumping off point for serous issues like who controls the remote or worse.  All of a sudden not cleaning your ice cream bowl can lead to a declaration that ‘you’re just like my father’ and two nights on the couch later you’re wishing you had not eaten that Chubby Hubby.

When planning to live with someone, a significant other, a friend or even a random roommate, think about what might cause friction before choosing a place.  Do you need his and her closets?  Do you need big enough space so you can separate from eachother with a closed door and not have to be in the bathroom? Do you need split bedrooms so your roommates’ late night World Of Warcraft sessions with 7.1 Surround Sound doesn’t keep you up all night counting trolls?

Life is short and sleeping (not on the couch) is important.  Get that dishwasher.
