An Ode to the 5 Most Expensive Rentals in Chelsea

Twas the dawn of ’11, and all through Manhattan,

Tenants had hopes rents would fall or be flattened.

But buyers were watching the market with care,

Fingers crossed that a housing dip would shortly be there.

So the sales volume shrank along with rent inventory,

Which makes for a sadder end to their story

With rental supply down and more seeking a lease,

The rents are actually primed to increase!

So with this in mind, I perused through the goods,

To search for the current high rents in each hood!

And what should my investigating eyes find today?

5 rentals in Chelsea each at least $20K!

On West 22nd, between 7th and 6th,

Was a floor-through loft with great walls made of brick.

With nearly 3,000 square feet to reside in,

It boasts a piano big enough to go hide in.

It has two beds and baths with 13 foot ceilings,

And a washer and dryer to induce warm fuzzy feelings.

A key locked elevator becomes your front door,

Available furnished or not, for short-term or more.

(132 W 22nd, $20,000/mo, Core NYC)

Then came a Townhome on West 25th Street

A bricked beauty triplex, with 4,500 square feet.

Four beds and four baths (really 3 and two halves),

All nestled between downtown’s 7th and 8th Aves.

The 2nd floor is all open, a true spacious head turner,

With living and dining and a Viking 6 burner.

Offered furnished to The Few, if you catch my cash meaning,

But then again $20K comes with a weekly full cleaning.

(267 W 25th, $20,000/mo, Corcoran)

Then we head west and the price per foot swells,

But that’s what’s required to live in Jean Nouvel.

At 3000+ feet and 20 floors o’er the Hudson,

The floor-to-ceiling windows make the view really something.

It has 3+ beds and 4 baths (though one has no shower),

A working gas fireplace and window shades that are powered.

This unique looking building wants you to rest at ease,

With a pool, fitness and concierge amenities.

(100 11th Ave, $26,000/mo, Corcoran)

The second in line to be the heavy-rent king

Is a full floor loft designed by Charles Gwathmey.

At 45’ long and 100’ wide,

It houses 2 beds and 2.5 baths inside.

So what else fills up this magnificent space?

An office, eat-in-kitchen, laundry and media place.

It comes fully furnished for three months to a year,

But please bring no pets as they’re not allowed here.

(227 West 17th, $27,000/mo,  Brown Harris Stevens)

And coming in 1st at around $1000 per day,

On 20th and 9th Ave – the grand Penthouse A.

Over 5,000 feet of space it provides,

With 3/5ths indoors and 2/5ths terraced outside.

At $30,000 a month the rent’s a touch scary,

But how many apartments come with a library?

3-4 bedrooms and 3.5 baths to stay clean,

Overlooking The Close a park “rare and serene”

(177 Ninth Ave, $30,000/mo, Elliman)

And thus ends our search for supreme Luxury,

In the downtown neighborhood we know as Chelsea.

The monthly outstrips what most of us seek,

But click here for the listings – at least it’s free to peek!
